WHY WAS LIVEMOCHA SO POPULAR?
Livemocha was a wonderful app that managed to unite 12 million people from different places in the world speaking over 35 languages under one learning roof.
The platform supplied all these eager learners with study materials which covered the basics of each of the 35 languages but the most attractive thing about Livemocha was the possibility to connect with others and make friends among the community members.
Thousands of users helped each other by sharing their enthusiasm to learn and teach each other languages by doing instant language exchanges.
The users themselves uploaded content, supported each other by contributing translations and reviewing each others’ work and exercises from lessons.
But why has this oasis for exhausted language learners been closed?
‘What was wrong?’ – you probably wonder.
All the motivation was based on the corrections and points based system. It meant that the exchange between learners was conducted mostly indirectly and was related to passing the courses available on the platform. One may say there was little emotional engagement between learners.
